Living with and caring for an older cat or dog can be extremely rewarding. As trusted family members for many years, it is reassuring to know that you will be able to offer them a happy, active, and meaningful life after 12, 15, 18, or in some cases even 20 years of companionship. It is equally rewarding for our vets, who have sometimes known these pets since they were kittens or puppies.
For our senior pets, we recommend:
- Semi-annual physical examinations, emphasizing examination of eyes, heart and teeth, along with a discussion of any questions or concerns
- Annual to semi-annual lab work
- Weight and dietary management
- Arthritis and pain management
